Keep Cool When The Weather Gets Hot: Tips To Help Your Air Conditioner Run More Efficiently

Posted on

As the warmer months approach, it's time to start thinking about your home air conditioning system. There are a number of things you can do to prepare for the cool season ahead, and the first of which is to call an HVAC company, like Edge Guys HVAC, to come and service your air conditioning system. You can remove any yard debris that has accumulated around your unit over the winter and look around your home for any vents that may be blocked. In addition, you can make sure that a technician will have easy access to your ductwork and air filters in the basement. Once your system has been serviced, you can begin to work on ways to help your system run more efficiently throughout the season.

Let the Air Flow

If you are going to shut off a room during the summer months to save money on cooling costs, make sure that the system isn't trying to cool down the room anyway. If you shut the door, make sure any temperature sensors are either turned off or removed. For the rest of the home, keep the air flowing from room to room to ensure a more even temperature. Your system won't have to work as hard when the air flows freely. Turn on ceiling fans to keep the air circulating.

Give Your System Breaks

Every time the weather cools down to a bearable temperature, turn your system off to give it a break. While you don't want to turn off your air conditioning during the hottest part of the day, giving your system a break at night will help the system run better during the day. An air conditioning system that is running 24 hours a day is more likely to break down, even if you got it serviced at the beginning of the season.

Turn the Temperature Up Two Degrees

To help your system work less, try turning your temperature up by two degrees. If this temperature feels comfortable to you, try turning it up two degrees more. You will save a little money on cooling costs for every degree higher you keep your home.

When you are trying to keep your air conditioner efficient, avoid temperature extremes. This means you shouldn't shut your system completely off when you leave for the day. By the time you get home, your house will be hot and your system will have to work hard to cool down your home to acceptable levels.
