2 Things To Do To Prepare Your AC For Winter

Posted on

Making sure that you have a working air conditioner is important in the summer. You don't want to sit in your house and sweat when you could be nice and cool instead. That's why you need to make sure that you prepare your AC the right way for the winter so that it will work well when you need it again next year. There are several things that you can do to help get your air conditioner ready for winter.

Clean the Outside Unit

One thing that you can do is clean of the outside unit. Cleaning your AC involves getting rid of any little twigs, grass, weeds, or other debris that might have gotten on the machine or grown up around it. Go through and remove any large pieces of debris, and pull any plants that might be growing around the unit. Once you have picked up all the debris and gotten rid of anything that might be stuck to it, you can take your hose and spray it down to get rid of anything else. Make sure that you aren't using a very high powered spray, that you hold the hose parallel to the unit, and spray the unit from the top down. If you do decide to spray the unit down, make sure that it's not going to be below freezing before your unit dries, because it could damage your air conditioner.

HVAC Inspection

You could also have a service tech from an HVAC service company come out and inspect your air conditioner for you. They will be able to check everything over for you so that anything that is broken or worn out is replaced or repaired before you need to turn it back on in the summer. The service tech is going to look at things like any fluid levels, like Freon, as well as making sure that your filters are in good shape. When they are done with the inspection, the tech will tell you what they found and let you know what is going on with your air conditioner. Getting it inspected regularly will make sure that your AC lasts as long as possible and stays as efficient as possible.

Making sure that your air conditioner still works at the start of the next warm season is important, especially if you live someplace that is really hot. Making sure that you shut it down correctly at the end of the year is one way to make sure that you have an AC that is all ready to go.
